What is the best alternative to Crestron for a home in the UK?
For a townhouse or family home, Loxone is the strongest alternative: it covers the automation depth people actually use — lighting, climate, shading, security, energy, multi-room audio — with fully local processing and no subscriptions, at roughly a third of a typical Crestron quote. Control4 sits between the two for AV-led projects. At true estate scale, Crestron itself is often the honest answer, and we say so below.
Is Crestron worth it for a family home?
In our honest experience, rarely. It is capable but overkill — the budget difference buys a lot elsewhere in the project. Crestron earns its place at estate scale: multiple buildings, bespoke interfaces, commercial-grade AV, and a client for whom the dealer relationship is a feature rather than a dependency. For everything below that, a Loxone specification delivers the automation at a fraction of the cost.
How much cheaper is Loxone than Crestron really?
Our Loxone projects run £8,000–£15,000 for a flat or starter system, £15,000–£40,000 for a typical London family home, and £40,000+ for whole-house automation. Comparable Crestron projects typically land at two to three times those figures, and ongoing changes are quoted at specialist programmer rates rather than a Config session. Does Loxone match Crestron on capability?
On automation logic — lighting scenes, climate control, shading, presence simulation, energy management — yes, and everything runs locally on the Miniserver. Where Crestron is genuinely ahead is fully bespoke user interfaces and commercial-grade AV distribution. If those two things are the point of your project, Crestron is the right tool. If they are not, you are paying estate prices for a family home.
Can you take over an existing Crestron system?
We cannot reprogram Crestron itself — that needs a Crestron dealer, ideally the one holding your project files. What we can do is survey the installation and quote a Loxone controls replacement that keeps the expensive physical layer: lighting circuits, blinds and motors, speakers, network and cabling generally stay. It is a controls swap, not a rip-out, and we quote it room by room.
