SCROLL TO EXPLORE

A Historic Transformation

Where railway heritage meets modern smart living

Station House sits in the Highbury conservation area: a two-floor apartment below street level, carved out of an old warehouse. We were brought in alongside LBMV architects to handle the technology — and below-street-level conversions are exactly the projects where planning matters most, because daylight, mobile signal and cable routes all work against you from day one.

The apartment's defining feature is a run of square brick arches, and during the works their history came to light: they were part of the original Canterbury Station, which once bridged the railway tracks here. The station above was demolished in the 1960s, but the structure below survived, hidden inside the building. Those arches set the rules for our entire installation — nothing could be chased or fixed in a way that damaged them.

LBMV's key move was opening the roof of one arched bay to form an internal lightwell, bringing daylight into the deepest part of the plan. Our job was to make the technology follow that idea: Kreon fixtures that graze the brickwork rather than flood it, Loxone lighting scenes that shift with the daylight coming down the lightwell, and a wireless Ajax security system chosen specifically so we didn't have to chase alarm cables through century-old walls.

“The rule we set ourselves on this job: the arches are the feature. If you notice the technology, it should be because it looks good — everything else stays out of sight.”
