Why It Matters
The most underrated automation we install.
Shading is climate control that costs nothing to run. In summer, blinds that drop before the afternoon sun arrive keep rooms cool without a watt of air conditioning — the system checks the forecast and acts in advance, not after the room has cooked. In winter it works in reverse: blinds close at dusk and hold the day's warmth in like a duvet over the glass.
It is also the half of automation you feel every single day. Waking to daylight instead of an alarm, glare gone from the screen before you noticed it, the house going private as the streetlights come on. Clients buy lighting control for the wow — a year later, it's the blinds they say they couldn't live without.
Shading runs on the same Loxone brain as our lighting control and heating control — one system deciding light, heat and shade together, locally, with no subscription.

Blinds suppliers sell blinds; automation companies sell gadgets. We do the whole job — the blind, the motor, the wiring and the logic — so a bay window, a skylight and a wall of bifold glass all answer to the same brain.

The workhorse: a motorised tube in a cassette, near-silent, sized to the millimetre. In blackout fabric with side channels it turns a bedroom properly dark — the version we fit most.

Wired or Battery?
“Do the blinds need wiring?”
The best answer is yes: a wired 24V or mains motor never needs charging, responds instantly, and disappears completely. Which is why our standing advice during any renovation is — if the walls are opening anyway, run cable to every window. It costs pennies at first fix and it is the cheapest moment you will ever have to do it properly.
In a finished house, battery motors are a genuinely good retrofit: discreet, quiet, charged a few times a year, and driven by the same Loxone logic as wired ones. We fit both, tell you honestly which each window justifies, and never motorise a blind that isn't worth the motor.

Smart & electric blinds FAQs
How much are electric blinds?+
A single motorised roller blind typically runs £300-£700 installed depending on size, fabric and motor type, with blackout side channels and larger or shaped windows adding to it. A whole-house project is priced per window and quoted itemised after a free survey, so you can see exactly what each window costs and prioritise — most clients start with bedrooms and the overheating rooms, then extend. Automation control adds little when it rides on a Loxone system that is already running the lighting and heating.
What is the difference between smart blinds and electric blinds?+
Electric blinds have a motor — you press a button. Smart blinds have a brain: they move themselves based on sun position, room temperature, time of day and whether anyone is home. Most "smart blinds" sold online are electric blinds with an app, which just relocates the button to your phone. On our installations the blinds are part of the Loxone system, so they act on their own — glare control, overheating protection, privacy at dusk — and the app is just an override.
Can my existing blinds be motorised?+
Often, yes. Many quality roller and venetian blinds can take a retrofit motor in the existing tube or headrail, and curtain tracks can be swapped for motorised ones without changing the curtains. Where the existing blind is not worth motorising we say so — a new motorised roller is often cheaper than adapting a tired one. The survey establishes which windows are retrofits and which want new blinds.
Do electric blinds need wiring?+
The best ones, yes — a wired 24V or mains motor never needs charging and responds instantly, which is why we always cable for blinds during renovations and new builds. In finished rooms, battery motors with a discreet charging point are a genuinely good retrofit option, typically needing a top-up a few times a year. We fit both, and we are honest at the survey about which each window justifies.
Do automated blinds work without the internet?+
Ours do. The blinds are driven by the Loxone Miniserver in your house — sun position, schedules, temperature logic and switches all run locally, with no cloud dependency and no subscription. The internet is only involved when you operate them from outside the house. If your broadband goes down, the blinds carry on exactly as before.
Are electric blackout blinds actually blackout?+
Only with side channels. A blackout fabric alone still leaks a bright halo of light around its edges — dramatic on a summer morning at 5am. A blackout roller running in aluminium side channels seals the window properly, which is what we specify for bedrooms. Paired with a wake scene that raises them gently with your alarm, it is one of the most life-improving things we install.
Can you automate blinds for bifold doors?+
Yes — big glazed openings are where shading automation earns its keep, because they are why kitchen extensions overheat. Depending on the opening we fit large-format internal blinds, in-frame solutions, or external screens that stop the heat before the glass. Driven by the weather forecast and room temperature, they drop before the room cooks rather than after.
