Home Cinema Room Design: The Decisions That Matter

Every disappointing cinema room we have ever been called to rescue was designed in the same order: equipment first, room last. A five-figure projector aimed at a wall that gets afternoon sun. Atmos speakers in a ceiling with heads nowhere near the right positions beneath them. A rack of premium electronics cooking in a sealed cupboard. The kit was never the problem — the sequence was. This is the sequence we actually use to design cinema rooms, decision by decision, in the order the decisions genuinely depend on each other.

Decision 1: What the Room Is For

A film-first room, a sport-and-games room, and a family media room are three different designs wearing the same name. Film-first means projector, controlled darkness and fixed seating. Sport and gaming want brightness, low input lag, and casual seating for more people — often a big TV beats a projector here. A family media room must survive daylight and Lego. Nothing else can be decided until this is, because it drives the display type, the light strategy, and how bombproof the finishes need to be. Say it out loud, and mean it: the room designed for everything is the room that is mediocre at everything.

Decision 2: Seats, Then Screen — Never the Reverse

Seating positions are the datum of the whole design; we covered the tape-measure detail in our seating guide. From the seats comes the screen: distance times roughly 0.8 gives a comfortable immersive diagonal (about 110 inches at 3.4m), and the screen centre lands near seated eye height — low, by DIY standards; the most common error we correct is a screen mounted for a standing audience that will never watch it standing. Only after the seats and screen are fixed do we know where sound has to image, which is why the speaker conversation comes third even though it is the one everyone wants to have first.

Decision 3: Projector or TV, Decided by Light

The choice is not really about picture quality — modern options are excellent on both sides. It is about light. A room you can make properly dark earns a projector and the true cinema picture, the biggest and best value per inch. A room with meaningful daylight or a sport-by-day brief points to a large-format TV (77-98 inches) or an ultra-short-throw projector with an ambient-light-rejecting screen. Fighting light with lumens is the losing strategy: brightness bought to overcome daylight is brightness you did not spend on contrast, and contrast is what makes a picture look like cinema after dark.

Decision 4: Sound, and Where the Money Actually Goes

The uncomfortable truth of cinema sound: the room matters more than the speakers. A £4,000 speaker package in a treated room beats a £10,000 package in a bare one, every time, and it is not close. So the design allocates for acoustics before it upgrades drivers — absorption at the first reflection points, bass control in the corners, and in dedicated rooms a fabric-walled finish that hides all of it. Speaker layout follows the seats: a centre channel behind an acoustically transparent screen at the right height (dialogue belongs in the picture, not under it), surrounds at and slightly behind the row, and Atmos heights positioned over the seating plan. We design 5.1.2 to 7.2.4 layouts; more channels in the wrong places lose to fewer channels in the right ones.

Decision 5: Light You Control Twice

Cinema light design has two halves. Keeping light out: proper blackout in any room with windows — blind side-channels matter, because a bright London afternoon leaks around an unframed blind edge dramatically. Putting light back deliberately: dimmable, warm, and in layers — step lights for navigation, low sconces or coves for the settle-in level, everything on scenes rather than switches. On our rooms the lighting belongs to the same system as everything else, so "Cinema" is one button: blinds seal, lights fall to 10%, the AV chain powers in the right order, and pause lifts the room gently. That scene is the single most-remarked-on feature of every room we hand over — above the projector.

Decision 6: The Boring Infrastructure That Decides Everything

Three unglamorous items separate rooms that work for a decade from rooms that niggle forever. Ventilation: people plus electronics in a sealed dark box equals a stuffy room within one film; quiet mechanical ventilation is a design item, not an afterthought. The rack: sources and amplifiers live in a ventilated, labelled rack — ideally outside the room, where its fans and LEDs cannot follow you into the dark — remotely rebootable, because the 9pm "no signal" call should be fixed from our office, not your loft. And cables: everything first-fixed before plaster, with spares pulled, because the HDMI standard will change again and the wall should not care.

Why the Equipment List Comes Last

Notice what happened: the projector — the thing every cinema conversation starts with — is the eighth decision, not the first. By the time the design reaches the equipment list, the room has already decided most of it: the throw distance shortlists the projectors, the seating distance sizes the screen, the acoustic plan sets the speaker budget honestly. Kit chosen this way is cheaper and better-fitting than kit chosen from reviews, because reviews are written about equipment in ideal rooms and you are not buying an ideal room — you are building one. How do you design a home cinema room?

In dependency order: decide what the room is genuinely for; fix the seating positions; size and place the screen from the seating distance; choose projector or TV based on how well you can control light; design speakers and acoustic treatment around the seats and screen; layer the lighting into scenes; plan ventilation, rack and cabling; and only then write the equipment list. Rooms designed kit-first get this exactly backwards, which is why so many disappoint.

What makes a good cinema room?

Controlled light, controlled sound, and comfortable sightlines — in that order, and all three are properties of the room rather than the equipment. A modest system in a dark, acoustically treated room with the screen at seated eye height outperforms expensive kit in a bare bright room every time. The fourth ingredient is integration: one button that runs blinds, lights and the AV chain together is what makes the room feel like cinema.

How big does a home cinema room need to be?

Smaller than the magazines suggest. A 3.5m x 4m spare bedroom makes a genuinely good single-row cinema with a 100-110 inch screen. Two rows of seating want roughly 5.5m of depth or more. Ceiling height matters for Atmos speakers and risers — 2.4m standard height works; below that we design around it. The room’s shape and light matter more than its square footage.

Is acoustic treatment worth it in a home cinema?

It is the best money in the room. Absorption at first reflection points and bass control in corners transform clarity — dialogue stays intelligible at any volume and bass stops booming. In dedicated rooms we design treatment behind acoustic fabric so the room looks finished, not padded. If the budget forces a choice between better speakers and treatment for the room, treatment wins, and it is not close.

Should the equipment rack be inside the cinema room?

Ideally not. A ventilated rack in an adjacent cupboard or plant space keeps fan noise and status LEDs out of the dark, and makes servicing possible without disturbing the room. Every rack we build is cabled, labelled and remotely rebootable, so most faults are fixed remotely. If the rack must live in the room, it needs designed airflow — sealed AV cupboards cook equipment, and heat is the quiet killer of electronics.
