Logic is decentralised, sitting in the devices themselves, so there is no central controller to fail. This is why consultants specify KNX for offices, hotels, and public buildings, and why a KNX installation from 1995 can still be extended today. The costs of that openness are real, though: devices are priced like the professional components they are, everything is programmed in ETS (a paid, licensed tool used by certified specialists), and the polished app experience homeowners expect is not part of the standard — visualisation comes from a separate server product at a separate price.
What Loxone Actually Is
Loxone is the opposite trade: one manufacturer, one ecosystem, one brain. The Miniserver runs every decision locally, the Config software is free to download, and the app, remote access, and firmware updates cost nothing for the life of the system.
